If
you are a cat person, no matter how long you may have been one, you
have experienced the horrors of kitty tearing at your furniture or
woodwork. And as most of us have done, we fuss at them and/or pull out
the squirt bottle.
You think you’re disciplining them, right?
Wrong! You’re fighting a loosing battle.
WHY?
Well let me share something. Back in the early nineties when de-clawing
was acceptable,(it is no longer), we had a beautiful Manx named Maxie.
She was de-clawed to solve this destructive behavior. We noticed though,
that she would “Phantom” scratch. Even though her claws weren’t there
she still had the instinctive & psychological need to, the
overwhelming desire to scratch.
What did this tell me? It is that this behavior is so ingrained in them that to hinder them would actually do harm!
The only solution that is feasible for cat owners who care is to provide an apparatus for them to safely and securely maintain their claws. There are hundreds of such devices made with all kinds of materials.
Sadly, very few are well thought out from the cats perspective. Cardboard does nothing for them but make a mess. Rope is better than cardboard but still shreds too easy and is messy. Most are designed thinking the cat wants to scratch at a 90* angle, not true. They don’t prefer that position at all.
The “Claw-Care” Cat Scratching Post is one of the few that are well designed thinking of kitty first! It is flat, heavy, adjustable and the pad materials were carefully chosen to provide the utmost benefit to their claws!
